In the war with Vladimir Putin’s Russia, Ukraine is receiving the next delivery of its air defense system from Germany. The arms manufacturer is based near Munich.
Munich/Kiev – The Moscow regime knows no limits in its brutality in the Ukraine war. The Russian army has once again attacked civilian buildings in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv with glide bombs.
Ukraine war: Germany supplies Kiev with TRML-4D air surveillance radars
One thing that has been learned from the insidious attack is that Kiev is still far from having sufficient air defenses to protect the country against the insidious air attacks from Russia. The next delivery from Germany has only just reached Ukraine, which is being ruthlessly attacked by Kremlin autocrat Vladimir Putin. It contained, among other things, two more TRML-4D airspace surveillance radars.
The number of these for the Ukrainian army rose to 13. This is evident from the list of military support services on the Website of the traffic light federal government (SPD, Greens and FDP). The handover of the radars will probably precede the delivery of further air defense systems IRIS-T SLS and IRIS-T SLM.
Air defence for Ukraine: Radars for air defence systems IRIS-T SLM and IRIS-T SLS delivered
The TRML-4D airspace surveillance radar is a radar component of both the IRIS-T SLS and the IRIS-T SLM. Germany has so far delivered three IRIS-T SLS air defense systems and four IRIS-T SLM air defense systems to the Ukrainians. Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) recently announced the delivery of a total of twelve IRIS-T SLS and twelve IRIS-T SLM. However, this will probably take some time.
The TRML, known in detail as the Telefunken mobile airspace surveillance radar, was originally developed by the Berlin-based radio and communications technology company Telefunken. The arms manufacturer Hensoldt from Taufkirchen near Munich now produces the systems that Ukraine is so desperately looking for. Since the IRIS-T SLM and IRIS-T SLS are being deployed at various locations throughout the country, some of the TRML-4D airspace surveillance radars are also needed.
Against Vladimir Putin’s missiles: Ukraine asks for more air defence systems from NATO
This is especially true since the Moscow regime has the individual parts for the Western air defense systems spied on and, in the worst case, attacked. In the past, at least two rocket launchers from a militarily valuable Patriot have been lost. A TRML has a range of up to 250 kilometers. That is a lot, but still not enough to cover a country the size of Ukraine. From the ranks of the NATO defense alliance, Ukraine’s neighbor Romania recently promised Kiev a Patriot battery to fend off Russian attacks.
However, Germany is the largest supplier of air defence equipment for the brutally invaded country. This is shown not least by a comparison with the USA, the largest supplier of weapons to the Ukrainian army. In addition to two Patriot batteries, the Americans have also provided twelve NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) air defence systems and various launch pads for MIM-23 HAWK. As can be seen from a list on the Website of the US State Department. In addition, 55 Gepard anti-aircraft gun tanks came from Germany – three more just last week.
Ukraine war: Radar from Germany can identify fighter jets and helicopters
The TRML is, of course, much more modern than the anti-aircraft tanks from the 1970s and 1980s. The latest version, 4D, is equipped with an active electronically scanned array antenna (AESA). The crew usually consists of two or three surveillance radar operators. The crew compartment for the operators is either mounted on a military MAN truck or installed independently as a container without a vehicle.
A sideband channel on the radar allows it to be used simultaneously against fighter jets at an altitude of up to 40 kilometers and against helicopters flying much lower and slower. To put it simply, radar detects flying objects using electromagnetic waves. The radar antenna sends short wave pulses that come back as an echo when they hit large objects. When flying low, identifying the object as an airplane or helicopter becomes even more difficult. (pm)
