Western Digital is reportedly planning to release 4TB SD cards for mobile devices and cameras by the end of 2025.
After years of waiting, the storage market may soon welcome new SD cards with memory cuts of up to 4 TBintended for professional cameras and more generally for all compatible devices.
The announcement was made directly by Western Digital, which plans to officially present the products starting this week, with the market launch postponed to 2025. Let's find out all the details together.
SD cards up to 4TB
As we mentioned at the beginning, the announcement of new 4TB SD cards was made by Western Digital, a major player in the storage market. The American company should present the SD cards already during the week, through its proprietary brand SanDisk.
As stated in the press release, the new SD cards will follow the standard Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) of the SD Association and will aim to meet the needs of users struggling with “large media and entertainment workloads“, particularly on the front of professional cameras and the new generation laptops they use “high resolution formats and high framerate“.
The card will use the Ultra High Speed-1 (UHS-1) bus interface, with a theoretical transfer speed up to 104 MB per second and a minimum speed of 10 MB/s, while the minimum sequential writing speed should instead reach 30 MB/s.
According to these specifications, 4 TB cards can handle 8K resolution content without too much difficulty: it is no coincidence that Western Digital has chosen the stage of the annual event of the National Association of Broadcasters to present its new gem.
Price and launch date
As stated in the company press release, the new 4 TB SD cards awill arrive by 2025approximately six years after the announcement of the SD Association's new standards.
At the moment Western Digital has not revealed further technical details, keeping the price confidential: from this point of view, we can easily hypothesize a rather high launch price, especially given the target audience the product is aimed at.
The arrival of the 4 TB SD cards could also revive SanDisk's image: the brand has recently suffered several backlashes resulting from the controversial reliability of the SD Extreme range, which has cost the company some lawsuits.
