An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 was recorded near the border between Iran and Iraq. On Saturday, January 4, reports the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).
The indicated magnitude characterizes a weak earthquake that can cause minor damage.
According to available data, the source of the earthquake lay at a depth of 60 km. The shock occurred about 25 km west of the Iranian city of Sarpol-e-Zahab with a population of about 51 thousand people at 06:15 local time (04:45 Moscow time).
There were no reports of casualties or damage.
Earlier, on February 2, seismologists registered an earthquake of magnitude 5 off the Pacific coast of Guatemala, 62 km from the city of Retaluleu, the administrative center of the department of the same name.
Prior to that, on January 20, an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 occurred in the Argentine province of Santiago del Estero. The source of shocks lay at a depth of 586 km. The epicenter was located 24 km from the city of El Hoyo with a population of 2 thousand people.
