Civil Defense in Brazil announced that the floods that struck the south of the country, after days of heavy rain, claimed the lives of at least 39 people, and the loss of 68 others.
The Civil Defense added late on Friday that more than 24,000 people were displaced from their homes as a result of the floods that struck more than 265 municipalities in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.
The Civil Defense in Porto Alegra, the capital of Guayba state, explained that a lake was formed due to the flow of water from several rivers, and it reached a record level of 4.77 meters on Friday evening.
This exceeded the record achieved in 1941 by one centimeter. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva described the disaster as one of the worst floods in the country’s history.
So far, more than eight thousand people have been rescued. The rains began on Monday, causing widespread flooding and landslides in some areas.
Homes and bridges were damaged, and many roads are currently unusable.
