Saturday evening entertainment is a relevant part of German cultural history. In this context, names of show masters such as Hans-Joachim Kulenkampff, Peter Frankenfeld and Thomas Gottschalk play a role, less those of footballers like Rocco Reitz, Robin Hack and Tim Kleindienst. Gladbach fans could see it differently.
Borussia Mönchengladbach will play a leading role in the Bundesliga entertainment on Saturday evening, but the club had not played this role so well before last Saturday. Five times this season-and since a Saturday evening 3: 0 against RB Leipzig on September 17, 2022, Gladbach was allowed to play this official “top game” without being able to win even one of them. Only now against VfL Bochum, in the sixth attempt of this season and in the 15th attempt one after the other, did the Borussians have a victory again at prime time.
However, this 3-0 was neither a surprise nor a revelation by hits from Reitz, Hack and Small Service. Bochum is already an extremely bad away team in the fourth Bundesliga year. Since its promotion in 2021, the district club of 61 Bundesliga away games has only won eight-not included the victory in Düsseldorf in the relegation. This season, the Bochumers of ten away games so far have not yet won-the 2-0 victory at Union Berlin (game exit 1: 1) at the green table is not yet final.
The Gladbachers are one of them. After three defeats in a row, they have now delivered a victory to their fans and thus: nice Saturday evening entertainment.
The Gladbacher now played three Saturday evening games in the Bundesliga in a row, and on the next Saturday against Frankfurt they are again part of the “top game” when it is dark. In terms of their current achievements, this is actually too much of honor. For about four years, Gladbach’s good reputation has been honestly better than his football. The sports director Roland Virkus says about the currently pronounced Saturday evening presence of his club: “Gladbach still has a name.”
After the victory against Bochum, the Borussians were relieved that they were able to stop the tabular descent after three defeats. “Important, such a victory if you got the bag three times before,” said the scorer Hack bluntly, and the scorer Reitz confessed: “Do good to win over a home backdrop.” Whether so many evening games are not exhausting , Reitz was asked. “I’m still young,” replied the 22-year-old with a smile.
VfL coach Hecking doesn’t know why his team scores almost exclusively at home
It is much more strenuous to lose. The trainer Dieter Hecking is 60 years old and cannot really understand why his VfL Bochum is a completely different team away, so much worse than at home. In this context, it should be remembered once again that the current champion Bayer Leverkusen suffered his last Bundesliga downward defeat on May 27, 2023 in the Bochum Ruhrstadion (0: 3). “I am sobered,” said VfL coach Hecking after the weak Bochum game in the Borussia Park and called the performance of his team “not ripening of the Bundesliga”. In five home games under Hecking, Bochum got eight points, but only one in five away games.
For the trainer, the return to the Borussia Park failed. In the summer of 2019, he was suddenly terminated his cooperation in Gladbach in order to be able to sign the emerging Marco Rose from Salzburg. Hecking with Bochum was hit on this rose a week earlier when Leipzig was stirred up a point. In Mönchengladbach, Hecking’s journey into the past has now received a damper. He also imagines good Saturday evening entertainment.
