There is no 24 hours of Le Mans without rain and the 2024 edition is no exception. After about an hour and a half of the race, in fact, some showers began to appear on the Circuit de la Sarthe, however only watering some areas of the very long French facility. A treacherous and difficult situation to read for drivers and teams which however this time Ferrari, unlike what happened in Imola, was able to interpret it perfectly, transforming it into the first turning point of the race.
In fact, Toyota, Alpine and Cadillac were the first to react to the showers of water, entering the pits to fit wet tyres. The three red cars initially all continued on the track, but on the following lap the #51 was also called back for a ride on treaded tyres. The #50 and #83 (the 499P of the AF Corse team), however, differed their strategy, remaining on the track with dry tyres. This turned out to be the winning strategy.
In fact, Nielsen and Kubica resisted very well on a damp but not flooded track, also providing entertainment – and some palpitations for the red fans – with a fantastic duel between them. After a few laps, with the track gradually drying out, it was necessary for those who had mounted wet tires to retrace their steps and put slick tires back on. For two of the three reds, therefore, the first strategic battle of this weekend was won. However, there are currently still 21 hours of racing to complete.
