Around 177 people are on the waiting list for an organ transplant in the state of Chihuahua, reported the head of the Ministry of Health, Gilberto Baeza Mendoza.
The organs with the highest demand are cornea, kidney and liver. Of the waiting list, 97 require cornea and 80 kidney; there is no record for heart transplants, said Baeza Mendoza. From January to August, 84 transplants have been performed, 47 of these to men and 37 to women, said the head of Health. It is through the State Transplant Center (CETRA) that work is done in coordination with 27 hospitals in the state, both public and private, that have a sanitary license for the disposal of organs, tissues and cells, in the municipalities of Juárez, Chihuahua, Parral, Delicias and Nuevo Casas Grandes, said the official. Currently, services for an organ transplant can be arranged through the MediChihuahua program, which provides care to people without insured status who require it. “The organ and tissue donation program aims to raise awareness among the population and improve the quality of life of those who need transplants,” said the official. He said that the program has been strengthened through conferences, workshops, and roundtables aimed at all personnel involved in the donation processes. So far during this administration, and until December of last year, 134 courses have been given, where 1,044 health professionals were trained, he reported. Likewise, until December 2023, a total of 243 certificates of registration were issued in the computer system of the national transplant registry, and during 2023, 93 certificates were granted as completion of the process of incorporation into the waiting list to receive a transplant, he noted. Likewise, the corneal transplant program in Ciudad Juárez and the service at the state’s Central Hospital have already been activated, as well as work is being done to carry out the procurement and transplant of kidney organs in the near future. The Ministry of Health also established a link with the National Transplant Center (CENTRA), which in turn established state links with the State Attorney General’s Office, which through agreements facilitate donation, transportation and transplantation, and with state entities such as Urge and Civil Protection, which provide the mechanisms for air or land transport in situations that warrant it, which allows reaching distant places. The head of health reported that in 2016 Chihuahua occupied the first places nationwide in organ and tissue procurement and transplantation, but during the previous administration there was a pause, so currently efforts are being redoubled and the entity is already in the national average.
