The towns of Elda, Petrer and Monóvar will celebrate next Saturday a ‘day of memory’ in which they will surrender tribute seventeen people shot in Alacant by the Franco dictatorship 85 years ago now, among them, a mother of a 15-month-old child, two socialist mayors and two unionists.
The tribute, which will include the participation of family members, will take place in the cemeteries of the three municipalities at different times and a plaque in memory of the victims of the Francoism in the town of Elda.
In Elda they were shot Maria Bello Perez26 years old, mother of a 15-month-old child; Manuel Gomez Lopezshoemaker and CNT union member, and Elías Ibáñez Morcillowho presided over the Single Union of the Leather Industry. In Petrerits mayor, Rosendo García Montesinosof the PSOEand in Monovarfive residents of this town, among them, the socialist mayor Vicente Barberá Torderasix from Elda and two from Pinoso (Alacant), according to sources from the Eldense town hall.

The event was presented this Monday by the Democratic Memory councilors of the town councils of Elda, Petrer and Monóvar, Maria Gisbert, Fernando Portillo and Julia Tortosarespectively; Manuel de Juanrepresentative of the organizing committee, and Paqui Ibanezgranddaughter of Elías Ibáñez Morcillo, shot in the Elda cemetery on November 16, 1939.
Gisbert has stated that “from the municipal institutions, and in accordance with the Democratic Memory Law, Public administrations must develop all those measures aimed at preventing the human rights violations that occurred during the coup d’état, the War and the dictatorship from being repeated again.. For this reason, it was decided to promote and support the tributes on November 16 in the three municipalities jointly.”
In the Elda cemetery a plaque will be placed in memory of the victims of the Franco dictatorship along with the names of the three people executed there: Elías Ibáñez Morcillo, Manuel Gómez López and María Belló Pérez, “whose son, Gerardo, who was 15 months old when his mother was executed, impatiently awaits this tribute to her 86 years“said the mayor.
For her part, Paqui Ibáñez, representing the relatives of the three Eldenses victims, stated that “they gave their lives to the defense of justice, freedom, democracy and fundamental rights.”
“I want to remember those who, as in the case of my family, were left without a husband, without a father and without a brother. The forgetting of the victims is another sentence and, for that reason, we heartily thank all those who have worked to bring María, Manuel and Elías out of oblivion.”
