The biological team specialized in dealing with predatory and wild animals at the Fujairah Environment Authority responded to 17 reports of a number of reptiles, invertebrates, and poisonous predators, which were reported by citizens and residents of the emirate via the specialized hotline to receive reports during the past year and until the first quarter of this year.
The director of the Fujairah Environment Authority, Asila Al-Mualla, told Emirates Today that the authority is equipped with specialized teams to deal with animal reports in systematic and deliberate ways, to maintain the safety and security of the environment, humans and animals, stressing the authority’s commitment to maintaining the environmental balance in the emirate. She pointed out that the biological team, consisting of environmental researchers, responds immediately to reports received by the hotline (800368) designated for reporting wild, poisonous and dangerous animals and birds, in addition to animals rarely found in the emirate, and processes them with high efficiency, and deals with them and completes them in record time, noting that The Authority always seeks to achieve the highest levels of performance in carrying out its tasks and performing its duties, especially in the field of dealing with predatory and dangerous animals, while adhering to professional and procedural standards.
She explained that wild animals were housed in quarantine or in Wadi Wurayah Reserve laboratories, where researchers place a chip (code) on the animal, allowing them to monitor it after returning it to its original environment, away from residential areas. In some cases, coordination is also made with the Ministry of Climate Change. And the environment to deliver animals to zoos in the country, whether for the purpose of study or coordination with the aim of protecting them.
Al-Mualla stressed the importance of raising awareness and social responsibility in protecting the environment and biodiversity.
For his part, the director of Wadi Al Wurayah Reserve, Dr. Ali Hassan Al Hamoudi, said, “Experts and researchers in the field of environment and other specializations available in the reserve are constantly working to monitor the diverse wild species in the emirate, protect biodiversity, and enhance environmental awareness in the local community, where the experts work.” Under the umbrella of the Fujairah Environment Authority, which emphasizes the protection of biodiversity through approved legislation and laws.”
He stated that experts and researchers recorded 20 species of mammals during the past years, including the lynx, the red fox, the Afghan fox (Blanford), the Indian crested porcupine, the mountain hedgehog, and the Arabian tahr, in addition to 114 species of birds, including owls, hawks, ospreys, and falcons.
