Mexico.- The Ministry of Health has confirmed 1,627 cases of monkeypox in Mexico until September 26, 2022, the majority concentrated in Mexico City, according to the Weekly Technical Report on Epidemiological Surveillance.
According to the document published by the Ministry of Health on the site viruela.salud.gob.mx, from May 27 to September 26, 3 thousand 69 suspected cases of monkeypox, of which 1,627 infections have been confirmed.
On the other hand, 434 cases are under study, 1,08 were discarded due to laboratory diagnosis and no secondary deaths reported to the disease, the report says.
There are two cases of people who died while receiving medical care for lesions consistent with monkeypox; When they were tested, they were positive. However, both deaths are under analysis by a group of experts in infectology, which will confirm whether the deaths were due to the disease or not.
Of the 1,627 monkeypox infections confirmed by the Ministry of Health, 98% correspond to men and 2% to women; 47.4% are between 30 and 39 years old, while among those under 20 years old, seven are 19, four are 18, three are 17, one is 16, one is 15, one is 13, one is 12, one is nine and another three years.
The registered cases are distributed as follows in the states: Mexico City, 967 infections; Jalisco, 215; State of Mexico, 141; Yucatan, 72; Quintana Roo, 39; Tabasco, 24; Chiapas, 20; New Leon 19; Lower California, 13; Morelos, 12; Puebla, 10 and Veracruz, 10.
They are joined by: Guanajuato, 9; Nayarit, nine; Chihuahua, 8; Sinaloa, 8; Aguascalientes, 6; Coahuila, 6; Hidalgo, 6; Oaxaca, 6; Queretaro, 5; Michoacan, 4; Campeche, 3; Colima, 3; Tamaulipas, 3; Sonora, 3, Zacatecas, 3; Baja California Sur, 1; Guerrero, 1 and San Luis Potosi, 1.
Until this date, There have been 65,295 confirmed cases of monkeypox in the world. in 105 countries, territories and areas in the six regions of the World Health Organization (WHO), and 26 deaths.
It should be noted that one case was confirmed in the United States by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with a history of staying in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, during its infective (transmission) period.
This disease is transmitted by direct contact with the secretions of a sick person through mucous membranes or skin lesions, respiratory droplets, and objects contaminated with body fluids. The illness lasts an average of 21 days.
It can be prevented by avoiding direct physical contact with people who are sick or suspected of having the disease. Sexual contact is an activity that must be taken into account, since it is spread by very close contact between two or more people.
There are practices that can increase the risk of infections, including monkeypox, such as: sex with strangers, dark rooms or sex parties; this, due to the close contact between people during these activities.
