Thirteen people were killed during an attack in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, local officials said Friday.
Kasireka Issei Megambo, mayor of Lomé in North Kivu province, said elements of the rebel group entered the town on Thursday evening, setting fire to a medical clinic and killing four patients.
He added that the attackers killed nine other civilians before they retreated to Virunga National Park, one of the world’s best known wildlife sites in eastern Congo.
Nurse Collet Buengoy said health authorities had counted 13 deaths in the attack.
Congolese army spokesman, Captain Anthony Mwalushai, said nine people were killed, including three children.
He added that an armed group carried out the attack.
