A day of celebration crowns the fairytale rise of 1. FC Heidenheim: Before the Conference League home game against Chelsea FC (Thursday, 6.45 p.m.), CEO Holger Sanwald remembered the beginnings in the national league, when people were still interested in sheep and goats Heidenheim football grounds walked past. “Nobody thought it possible that we would be where we are now,” said Sandwald, who has been active in a managerial position for the club since 1995, most recently on ZDF: “I don’t think you can ever hope for something like that get used to. This is something totally special for us.”
After the draw, Sanwald described the Chelsea visit as “another historic highlight in our club’s history”. The glamorous London world club and Champions League winner from 2012 and 2021 will be accompanied to the Ostalb by 1,700 fans; the smallest Bundesliga stadium (15,000 seats) is sold out. Although both teams are level in the table with full points, the contrast is huge. “The club used to have to pay a lot of money for such teams to play a friendly here. Now they have to come,” joked FCH coach Frank Schmidt.
