Paired with Melo at the ATP 500 in Acapulco he suffers a wrong call, loses double and unleashes his fury against the high chair
Could it have been the record game that ended a few minutes before 5 in the morning that put his biorhythms out of sync? Because a simple referee’s decision certainly can’t cause so much violence even in an important doubles tournament. Sascha Zverev, engaged tonight with his friend and mentor Marcelo Melo, literally went mad and was disqualified from the organization of the Acapulco tournament.
The German, who faced the Glasspool-Heliovara duo with the Brazilian, in a match that stretched to the super tie break. Zverev and Melo were 6-8 down when a ball from the opponents that seemed out and that the same audience had judged out, was called “in” by the chair judge.
Zverev demands that the referee get off his chair to check the sign, clearly out, but by now the referee had made his decision: match point for the opponents. Zverev and Melo lose the match and Sascha freaks out taking a visibly frightened referee’s chair racket. Expelled from the tournament for unsportsmanlike conduct.
