The Dubai Chess and Culture Club, in cooperation with the Times Square Center in Dubai, celebrated the International Chess Day, which falls on July 20 every year. 1924, and it was adopted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization “UNESCO” in 2019.
The initiative aims to spread chess in society, because of its many benefits in developing the skills and behaviors of young people, in terms of focus, logical thinking, problem solving and sportsmanship.
The celebration’s activities included holding various activities for all ages, as the “Bullet” chess tournament was organized with a thinking time of one minute, and the Blitz Chess Championship for young and old, in addition to face painting activities, problem solving and making chess pieces out of paper “origami” and giant chess.
In the Blitz Chess Championship, the Philippine international master Oliver Demaceling won with 6.5 points, followed by his compatriot Alterado Israel Franklin with 6 points, and Roberto Karadang came third. “The Shot”, the great Ukrainian international professor Alexander Zubarev was able to win both tournaments, which witnessed the participation of 60 players.
The referee and international organizer Saeed Youssef Shoukry, Secretary-General of the Dubai Chess and Culture Club, congratulated the chess community around the world on this festive day.
He expressed his great happiness in the partnership with the Times Square Center in Dubai, the host of the event, which harnessed its capabilities to make the event a success. He also thanked Paradigm, the club’s partner in organizing.
Shoukry explained that the club’s summer activity plan included, in addition to the celebration of the World Chess Day, the Dubai Summer Chess Classic Championship, which will continue until July 24, and will witness the participation of 145 male and female players from 17 countries, in addition to the participation of players in the Sharjah Summer Championship and the Abu Dhabi Chess Festival, In conclusion, the Dubai Open Chess Championship, which is organized by the club at the end of August, and will continue until the beginning of September. The club also sent 4 elite players to the Czech Republic to participate in the Bardubice and Prague tournaments with the aim of international contact and gaining experience.
