A surprising move by one of the greatest Dutch racing talents of the moment, Zonta van den Goorbergh. The 15-year-old from Breda skips the Moto3 and will drive next year GPs in Moto2 with the Dutch RW Racing. This means that two Dutchmen will be at the start in Moto2 in 2022 with Bo Bendsneyder and Zonta van den Goorbergh.
For Zonta van den Goorbergh, who will again be a regular columnist in KicXstart next year, it was a well-considered decision. Another season of Moto3 Junior World Championships had not yielded the desired progression and the traditional Moto3 GP route was not so obvious either, he said. Misha van den Goorbergh, besides mother also one of the driving forces behind Zonta’s racing career:
“In our view, this decision is the best, Moto3 seems more obvious but there are also a few drawbacks, Zonta is quite tall for its age and we also hear the sounds from the paddock that the transition from Moto3 to Moto2 is often very difficult. More difficult than from Moto2 to MotoGP. Then it would be a shame if you may have been fighting for several years in Moto3 and then develop a driving style that will not help you much in the further course of your career. Ultimately, of course, MotoGP is the ultimate goal. Zonta now starts at 16e in Moto2, very young, but he gets time to grow within the team without being under a lot of pressure right from the first race. The main thing is that he shows progress.”
RW Racing Team Manager Jarno Janssen via Racesport.nl also responded to the arrival of Zonta:
“It is of course fantastic that we can achieve our driver line-up for 2022. with Barry [Baltus] we signed a two-year contract last year, and I think at the moment we can be satisfied with the progress that Barry is showing every weekend. In addition, Zonta van den Goorbergh will join the team from next season. I am convinced that with Zonta and his support team we have made the right choice to make the step to the Moto2 class. We know his talent and we are therefore delighted that in 2022 we can start working with two very young talents, a young Belgian and a young Dutchman. If this opportunity presents itself, then I think we can and should only be very proud together with our Dutch partners.”
In the upcoming KicXstart (Nov 11 in the shop), Zonta himself tells the story behind his switch to Moto2.
