The CEO of the BMW Group, Oliver Zipse, was re-elected president of the association of European car manufacturers (for simplicity, ACEA). For the top executive of the Bavarian auto company it is the second term, and it makes sense considering the battles the association is waging. Over the past two years, ACEA has often criticized the European Union for its electrification decisions, fearing the loss of jobs and pointing out the lack of charging infrastructure. Zipse in 2022 will presumably continue along this line, considering that BMW is one of the manufacturers aiming at the same time as electric, hydrogen, hybrid and even the good old endothermic.
“The European automotive industry is a global leader, using its innovative capacity to provide solutions to tackle climate change. We are convinced that sustainability and global competitiveness can go hand in hand – and even strengthen each other – if both are driven by technological innovation. We therefore look forward to next year when the EU defines the key legislation that will shape the future of our industry. As an industry, we have the right vehicle technology right out of the box. However, making sure enough Europeans buy these vehicles in the coming years will largely depend on the speed and breadth of infrastructure deployment across the EU. We call on the Council and Parliament to ensure that the targets are sufficiently ambitious and robust to enable future CO2 targets to be achieved in practice“, Declared Zipse.
In October, new car sales in Europe fell by 30% compared to 2020, marking the fourth consecutive month of decline. Zipse commented on the situation, also talking about the chip crisis: “For the sake of the global competitiveness of our industry, Europe needs to strengthen its technological sovereignty to be able to supply essential components to the key industries of the region.“. We recall that the ACEA board of directors is made up of the CEOs of the 16 main European manufacturers of cars, vans, trucks and buses.
