As scheduled, Alfa Romeo Sauber made official the engagement of Guanyu Zhou, young Formula 2 driver, who will take the place of Antonio Giovinazzi, who will leave the team after three seasons. The team based in Hinwil sought the best compromise between talent on the track and economic advantages and the choice fell on the Chinese standard bearer, the first representative of his country on the starting grid in the history of Formula 1. Zhou has in his wealth of experience inclusion in 2014 in the Ferrari Driver Academy and in 2018 in the Renault Academy. With the French team he was able to get on an F1 car for the first time in December 2020, during the end-of-season tests in Yas Marina and again on the Alpine A521 in the PL1 of Austria 2021. The official statement only talks about the season 2022, with no further references to subsequent years.
Frederic Vasseur, team principal of Alfa Romeo Sauber, welcomed the Chinese as follows: “It is a pleasure for us to welcome Guanyu Zhou. He is a very talented driver, as his results in F2 have shown we can’t wait to further blossom his talent in Formula 1. We are proud of our 2022 line-up and are confident that Zhou will form a duo of success with Valtteri. We are also looking forward to welcoming the new Chinese fans who will join the team. We will try our best to honor our sport in China“. These are Zhou’s first words as an F1 driver: “Since I was a boy I have dreamed of arriving in this category e now the dream is reality. For me it is a privilege to start my career in an iconic team, a team that has made many young talents debut over the years. I feel ready for the huge F1 challenge. My goal will be to learn as much as possible and as quickly as possible. Being the first Chinese driver in F1 is a turning point in the history of motorsport in China. There will be great expectations for me and I will take it as a source of motivation to improve ”.
