In his latest statements, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced, on Sunday, in an interview with CNN, his willingness to negotiate with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, warning that if attempts to negotiate fail, it may mean that the fighting between the two countries “will lead to the outbreak of a third world war.”
He added: “So I think we have to use any formula, any opportunity in order to have the possibility of negotiation, the possibility of talking with Putin, but if these attempts fail, then this means that this is a third world war.”
Although observers consider these statements from the Ukrainian president to fall within the context of intimidation and an attempt to exaggerate the dangers of this war, and to give a greater volume to his regime and country in international equations and balances, others see that it is quite the opposite, realistic and expressive of the seriousness of the Ukrainian crisis, which according to them “has become An indirect Russian-Atlantic war, which could turn into a direct confrontation at any moment.”
Commenting on the reality of Zelensky’s warning of a third world war if his country’s negotiations with Russia fail, Ihsan Al-Shammari, director of the Center for Political Thinking, told Sky News Arabia: “Zelensky’s statement is undoubtedly accurate and correct, given that it Indeed, if Moscow does not accept compromise solutions to stop the current war, the West will undoubtedly not allow Putin to reach the edge of the European Union.”
And he continues: “If Russia succeeds in biting Ukraine, the Russian bear will move farther from it, and this constitutes a direct threat to the security of the European Union and NATO.”
He added: “The continuation of the war in this way and without signs of diplomatic solutions, will lead to the influx of more weapons and Western military aid to Ukraine, and this is what Moscow considers as an obstacle to its progress and achievement of its Ukrainian mission, and to raise Kyiv’s military capabilities to confront it, which may push Russia, in turn, toward uncalculated reactions.” It could lead to a third world war.”
Al-Shammari, who is also a professor of political science, adds: “Although this disastrous option is not on the table for all the conflicting parties now, in the end, if this war extends, the Western Atlantic effort, American and European, will focus on protecting, helping and supporting Ukraine in the face of the Russian attack. To prevent it from falling into the hands of Moscow, and for all these reasons, the Ukrainian president’s warnings of a third world war represent a realistic reading to a large extent.”
And he considers that “in the end, and in light of the continuation of the war, a Russian-Western military clash will inevitably occur, which may unfortunately spark the third world war.”
As for the researcher and expert in European affairs, Maher Al-Hamdani, he says in an interview with “Sky News Arabia”: “Any two conflicting parties, it is obvious that after they entered into the midst of negotiations between them and prior to its multiple rounds, they intend to raise the ceiling of their demands and escalate positions, pressures and statements towards the opposing party.”
And he continues: “On the ground, and contrary to what Zelensky says about his country’s imminent accession to the European Union and his warnings of the outbreak of a third world war, his statements seem bigger than Kyiv, and they are illogical and not entirely realistic.”
Al-Hamdani explains: “The European Union, NATO, the United States and the Western bloc as a whole have repeatedly announced that they will not be dragged into a third world war and a military confrontation with Russia, and despite these exaggerations in his statements, Zelensky appears, according to the data, that he is on the verge of concluding an agreement with Moscow to stop the war, and this A sign that what is going on in the closed negotiating rooms is completely different from what is usually announced in public positions and statements for local consumption.
