Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine still controls key areas of the country that Russian forces are trying to control, weeks after Russia’s continued offensive.
In a video message posted early Friday on the Telegram platform, Zelensky said that Ukrainian forces responded to every attack by Russian units.
The Ukrainian president added that residents in cities such as Mariupol in the south of the country, Kharkiv in the east and Chernihiv in the north, which are still besieged by Russian forces, will not be abandoned.
From the army to the church, he added, everyone does everything they can do for the Ukrainian people, and promised, “You will be free.”
He also thanked US President Joe Biden for his “new and effective” assistance.
Zelensky promised to help entrepreneurs by reducing red tape and offering interest-free loans during armed conflict.
Meanwhile, indications have emerged that the bombed theater in the besieged city of Mariupol may have held more people than previously thought.
Ukrainian parliament member Serhii Taruta wrote on Facebook early Friday that at least 1,300 people may have been sheltering inside the building when it was bombed on Wednesday. Taruta said the prosecution is based on accounts from people who have been inside and have since left Mariupol.
Until now, city authorities were assuming about a thousand people were inside the theater seeking protection.
