The plenary applauds the Ukrainian leader and nine countries claim the country’s entry into the community club
The European Parliament, through its president Roberta Metsola, has reiterated its condemnation of the invasion of Moscow. “We will not look the other way when those who are fighting are confronted by Putin’s war machine,” she said. This aggression is also “an existential threat to the Europe we know.” For this reason, the president of the European Council has also advocated “strengthening ties” with Ukraine.
Fast track entry
The request for a fast track entry of Ukraine has gained more and more strength in recent days, since the entry of Russian troops and with the declarations of the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, which opened the door to their membership in the community club. Zelensky has already signed the formal request, a historic step supported by nine countries, including Bulgaria, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Slovenia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
The request should now achieve unanimity in the European Council, in a long and rigid process, which can last decades.
