Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the international community to cover his country’s budget deficit, which is expected to reach $38 billion next year, after the Russian operation inflicted heavy damage on the Ukrainian economy.
At the conference, Zelensky urged European leaders to provide greater financial support to his country, more than eight months after the Russian operation.
“It is at this conference that a decision should be taken on assistance to cover Ukraine’s budget deficit next year,” Zelensky said in a video call, adding, “It is a very large amount, a deficit of $38 billion.”
For his part, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that “the reconstruction of Ukraine requires a new Marshall Plan for the twenty-first century, and it is the task of a generation that must begin now.”
