Attack on Titan definitely one of the most brutal anime in recent years, and the story of Ymir It is a clear example of how dark the series can be when it is proposed. Studio MAPPA is still working on the fourth and final season of the anime, and according to its director, there was a movie of Zack Snyder in particular that helped them to improve the narrative.
As part of a new interview, the director of the anime of Attack on Titan Yuichiro Hayashi explained how they managed to tell the story of Ymir in such a devastating way. According Hayashi, MAP kept looking for a way to tell this story in a way that felt brutal, and to do so, they turned to the visual style of 300movie directed by Snyder.
“We had a lot of trouble with the visuals in that scene. I didn’t want to do an ordinary flashback. I wanted it to be much more impactful. The characters look darker because they are all backlit, while the sky is bright. We wanted it to look like a scene from the movie 300. That helped us create an extraordinary setting. I thought that having an ordinary blue sky would not fit the scene. We needed a world with a tense and disturbing atmosphere to make it known that something weird was going on.”
300 debuted in 2006 and definitely became the film that positioned Snyder under the spotlights. The visual style of 300 was something rarely seen on the big screen, and it proved that Snyder had the necessary tools to stand out as a director in Hollywoodeven if his most recent projects have been somewhat controversial.
Publisher’s note: Snyder has one of the most recognizable visual styles in the industry, and while they don’t always work, nearly every one of his movies is an incredible visual delight. It’s a shame that Warner hasn’t already given him a chance to move forward with his own vision of the DCEU, but at least they let him pitch his cut of the Justice League.
