Youtube this Friday (11) blocked the channels of Russian state vehicles that receive government funds, a measure adopted because it considers that they violate usage policies by minimizing violent events, such as the war in Ukraine. In a statement, YouTube spokesperson Farshad Shadloo explained that the video portal’s internal rules prohibit content that “denies, minimizes or trivializes well-documented violent events.”

In compliance with this rule, the platform has been removing non-compliant content since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and has also blocked, with immediate effect and worldwide, pro-Russian government communication channels that repeatedly downplay the violence. in Ukraine.

On the other hand, hours before YouTube’s announcement, Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, announced that, temporarily due to the war in Ukraine, it will allow users to circumvent usage rules and send messages that would normally be prohibited, such as “death to the Russian invader”. Company spokesman Andy Stone explained that the exceptions are allowed temporarily due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and do not include “credible” death threats against Russian civilians.
