Even when you have both feet on the ground, the airplane mode of your phone can be useful.
a little rest
Turning on airplane mode disables all wireless connections on the phone. Think of the ring signal, but also the WiFi and Bluetooth connection. In other words: you are no longer reachable at all.
Sometimes that is very nice, for example if you want to shut yourself off from the outside world for a while. The airplane mode comes in handy during memorial moments, evenings with friends or when you just want some peace of mind.
After all, telephones do everything they can to attract our attention and with airplane mode you tackle all those distracting messages, calls and notifications at the core: they only come ‘in’ the moment you can be reached again.
Energy-efficient
The more your phone does, the faster the battery drains. Some apps continuously update your location, and your phone searches for cell towers and Wi-Fi networks all the time to stay connected.
By turning on the airplane mode, you limit the power consumption because all these functions are (temporarily) turned off. This is useful when the battery is almost empty and you do not have a charger to hand.
Faster charging
Speaking of energy, turning on airplane mode will charge your phone faster. All those wireless antennas then consume less, so that it runs out less quickly while it is fully charged.
Admittedly, the difference between charging with and without airplane mode is not huge. Suppose that charging your phone battery normally takes an hour and a half, then it takes about ten to fifteen minutes less with airplane mode on. But sometimes every minute counts and that little bit can make a difference.
Avoid high costs
Fortunately, we do not pay roaming charges within the European Union, but we do pay outside of it. Mobile internet in (distant) foreign countries can therefore be very expensive.
You can prevent this by turning on airplane mode when you’re out and about. As soon as you are back in a place with a WiFi connection, such as a hotel or restaurant, turn the function off again. That way you prevent a phone from guzzling mobile data all day long.
A quick reset
Some times it takes longer to open a website than others. This may be because your phone has a bad signal, or something is wrong with the underlying settings.
You may be able to solve this problem by briefly turning Airplane mode on and off. As a result, your phone creates a new data connection and the connection to WiFi is re-established.
Avoid Ads
Also useful: Airplane mode is able to block ads. This comes in handy when playing (offline) games. Many game makers use the internet to load advertisements, but thanks to the airplane mode that is not possible.
