Since the recent opening of Nintendo Museum a premiere also arrives in Kyoto, shocking revelation: in fact we come to know that Yoshi’s Island is not a Mario chapter, but is instead part of the Yoshi seriesapparently in the official vision of the company itself.
While the question is definitely logical, it clashes with the historical classification of Yoshi’s Island as Super Mario World 2a definition that appears in the title of the game itself and which seemed to clearly place it within the main series of Nintendo platformers.
Not only that, the choice to associate it with the Mario series seemed further reiterated by the subsequent definition of Super Mario Advance 3within the new cataloging that was adopted with the relaunch of the various chapters for Game Boy Advance.
In the museum it is placed in another section
The new revelation emerges from location of the game inside the new museum dedicated to Nintendo, where the title does not appear in the section focused on the main Mario series, but in the one dedicated to Yoshi.
There is therefore no official communication from the company on the location of Yoshi’s Island, but this arrangement within the Nintendo Museum seems rather explicit.
According to what was reported by journalist Dan Ryckert of Gamespot, who had the opportunity to visit the museum, inside there are exhibitions focused on the individual series of the company and Yoshi’s Island appears inside the one dedicated to Yoshi and not to Mario. This therefore clashes with the definition of Super Mario World 2 and places the title in line with the following chapters entirely dedicated to Yoshi, something that in fact many have always suspected.
The gameplay of Yoshi’s Island appears very different from that of the classic Mario games, with the use of the dinosaur introducing a series of dynamics different from the classic ones. Of course, the presence of Baby Mario acts in a certain sense as a link between the two series, but his marginal role is not enough to put him at the center of the action.
If we can take the location chosen in the Nintendo Museum as an official statement from the company, we can therefore finally resolve the long question and say that Yoshi’s Island is part of the Yoshi series, not the one dedicated to Mario.
