The Arab coalition in Yemen, led by Saudi Arabia, reported on October 24 that it carried out new bombings in the last three days around the city of Marib, where 264 Houthi rebels were killed. This latest government stronghold in the north of the country has been the scene of bloody clashes between the Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, and the troops of the internationally recognized Administration of President Abed Rabu Mansur Hadi, exiled on Saudi soil.
The Saudi-led military coalition in Yemen claimed on Sunday, October 24, that it killed 264 Houthi rebels. The events took place during new airstrikes in the last three days around the strategic city of Marib.
“36 military vehicles have been destroyed and more than 264 terrorists eliminated” in the last 72 hours in Al-Jawba, fifty kilometers south of Marib, and Al-Kassara, thirty kilometers northwest of Marib, the coalition explained. by the official Saudi agency SPA, referring to the Houthi rebels.
Marib, in the north of the country and the last bastion of the internationally recognized government, has been at the center of a bloody battle since last February. The clashes have intensified in recent days with the advances of the rebels.
Last week, most of the bombings, which were announced almost daily by the coalition, were carried out in Al-Abdiya, a hundred kilometers south of Marib. More than a thousand Houthis died there, says the Saudi-led military alliance.
“Increasing risk of a large-scale famine”
The rebels, backed by Iran, have clashed with government forces for seven years and captured most of the nation’s north, including the capital Sanaa, in 2014.
The following year, the Riyadh-led coalition intervened to support forces loyal to the administration of President Abed Rabu Mansur Hadi, exiled on Saudi soil.
On Wednesday, the UN Security Council called for a “de-escalation” in Yemen to counter “the growing risk of large-scale famine” in that country.
The war has plunged the poorest country on the Arabian Peninsula into the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, according to the UN. Thousands of people, most of them civilians, have died and millions have been displaced since the conflict began.
