The modification work was carried out in three areas on the track, namely the northern narrow turn, the marina area, and the hotel section. The objectives of the modifications include increasing the rate of driving speed, providing additional opportunities for side-by-side racing, and providing more overtaking possibilities, which adds an additional dose of suspense and excitement. To the racing atmosphere, whether for followers or drivers.
North turn
The modifications in the northern turn area are the most important, and include the removal of Turns 5 and 6 before the narrow northern turn, which has widened its angle, in addition to a track that has become 20 meters wide. From the bend into the straight lane at higher speeds than before, which enables drivers to get closer to each other when entering and exiting the bend into the straight lane, and increases the chances of overtaking.
dock bend
Modifications in the marina area include transforming it into a new, unique 18-metre-wide angle of inclination, allowing drivers to enter the curve at speeds up to 240 km/h.
hotel department
The hotel section may look the same at first glance, but the modifications in Turn 17-20 include widening the corners of each one. To this area to gradually return to the distance again through it. The angle of inclination of the outward corners, accompanied by the low speeds of passing, led to high levels of tire slippage, increased consumption rates and temperatures.
Adjustments were limited in this area due to its presence under the hotel, but widening the cornering angle contributes to reducing tire slip, and increases the ability of drivers to get closer to their competitors and chase them closely. The convergence of distances contributes to providing overtaking opportunities in other areas of the track.
Modifications in the three areas of the track provide a cumulative effect during the race and contribute to adding more excitement to the motorsport activities at Yas Marina Circuit for both drivers and spectators, and drivers can test their driving skills and those of competitors in overtaking maneuvers.
Mark Hughes, Managing Director of MRK1 Consulting, which was tasked with overseeing the modification program and implementation, said: “We worked with Abu Dhabi Motorsports Management Company to plan the modification program and the new design of the track for a period of about a year, and Yas Marina Circuit is one of the most advanced Formula 1 circuits.
