Launched at the end of August this year to combat illegal mining and expel non-indigenous people from the Yanomami Indigenous Land, in the North of the country, the so-called Operation Yanomami has already resulted in the seizure of 111 aircraft, of which 22 have been rendered useless.
According to a balance released today by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP), ten ferries, 11 vehicles and four tractors used to commit environmental crimes had also been destroyed up to last weekend.
In addition, the fight against illegalities around and inside the country’s largest reserve of indigenous usufruct has also resulted in the arrest of 38 people and the seizure of around 30,000 kilos of ore and 850 ammunition. In total, 87 airstrips and three clandestine ports were inspected.
Coordinated by the Secretariat for Integrated Operations (Seopi) of the MJSP, the initiative brings together efforts from several federal agencies, including the Federal and Federal Highway Police; the Brazilian Institutes for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) and Chico Mendes for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio); regulatory agencies; National Public Security Force; National Indian Foundation (Funai) and Ministry of Defence.
“This is a response from the federal government to protect indigenous peoples and fight environmental crimes, and it demonstrates that the integrated work of federal forces and agencies brings good results”, said, in a statement, the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Anderson Torres.
Also according to the balance, in December, more than 1 thousand basic food baskets were distributed in the region, totaling 25 tons of food. The measure was a joint effort with Funai, with a plane made available by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).
With about 9.66 million hectares (each hectare corresponds, on average, to the measurements of an official football field), the Yanomami reserve covers part of the territory of Roraima and Amazonas. The extensive area of preserved vegetation, twice the size of the state of Rio de Janeiro, attracts the greed of miners and loggers, causing conflicts between indigenous and non-indigenous people.
Historic
According to the Yanomami Hutukara Association, an organization that brings together representatives of all indigenous peoples living in the reserve created in 1992, around 20,000 miners work illegally in the demarcated area, deforesting the forest, contaminating waterways with mercury and iodine and eroding the banks of rivers.
In May of this year, the association denounced a series attacks on communities spread throughout the interior of the indigenous land.
Also in the first half of May, the Federal Court determined that the Union maintain permanent armed forces in the Palimiú community, to ensure the safety of residents and prevent further attacks like the one reported on May 10th. The court decision also established that Funai should assist the security forces in contacting indigenous peoples and managing intercultural relations.
Ten days later, it was the turn of Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), to decree that the Union guaranteed, by all necessary means, the protection of the life and health of indigenous populations in the lands demarcated by the Yanomami and Munduruku.
Barroso’s decision responded to a request from the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (Apib), which called for the urgent removal of invaders, especially from the demarcated territory of the Yanomami, “in view of the imminence of genocide and the escalation of the spread of malaria and covid. -19 in the one mentioned by illegal miners”.
Since 2020, a Public Civil Action filed by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) asks federal authorities to remove from the area all non-indigenous people not authorized to remain inside the reserve.
