Some of you may have gotten the feeling that Yakuza: Like a Dragon looked a lot like an anime. Well it’s no coincidence, because the game’s head writer said he was “very influenced” by the popular anime one piece.
During an interview with Crunchyroll News at Tokyo Game Show 2022, Masayoshi Yokoyamathe boss of the studio Ryu Ga Gotokurevealed that Yakuza: Like a Dragon was heavily inspired by two anime: One Piece and Bleach.
“For me, Ichiban is basically Luffy. And around him, there are Zoro and Nami and basically the rest of the group, you know?. “The composition of the One Piece party was on my mind so much during the writing that it was a huge influence“.
Unlike previous Yakuza games, which were largely an “individual show,” Like a Dragon features a turn-based combat system, where members of Ichiban’s gang interact with each other in and out of combat, just like One Piece.
“In my heart Yakuza 7 was basically my ideal version of what Yakuza: One Piece would be.“said Yokoyama.”That’s how I got the inspiration to make it happen!“.
In addition to the Like a Dragon party dynamics inspired by One Piece’s Straw Hat Pirates, Yokoyama also revealed that the game’s dialogue was inspired by another anime, Bleach. Bleach characters have a habit of explaining every little detail of their powers and plans to each other during battles, and this also happens in Like a Dragon.
As for the Yakuza series in general, it was recently announced that Like a Dragon: Ishin! will launch on February 21, 2023 on PS5, Xbox Series X / S, PS4, Xbox One and PC. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name will follow in the course of the year and Like a Dragon 8 in 2024, both of which will be released for the aforementioned platforms.
