There are sagas that take time to get into the hearts of the players, although in the end they manage to do so in their favorite ways and times. The one of Xenoblade Chronicles it is certainly one of them. Xenoblade Chronicles 3which today we propose in review, since the announcement has established itself as the third chapter that would have imprinted in stone the universe created by Monolith Softwarea role-playing game with an innovative flavor and above all rich novelty that it was legitimate to expect from a narratively fundamental chapter for the closing of a circle.
The conflict
The plot of the game is as simple as it is functional (also thanks to the characters), and places us in a context in which nothing is as it seems. In the world of Aioniostwo rival nations, the Keves and the Agnus, are besieged by a conflict which seems to be endless. The first is a nation where purely mechanical technology has been developed, given that its armies mainly deploy small arms patrols operated directly by soldiers. The second, on the other hand, is a nation that bases all its strength on the ether, a magical technology, with its armies that use small mobile weapons powered by this technology.
Time is a key resource for the inhabitants of the two kingdoms, despite themselves forced to extend their lives by fighting relentlessly to complete their mandatory ten-year military service. After a completely random encounter, a group of six soldiers from these rival nations (more precisely three soldiers of Keves, Noah, Lanz and Yunie, and three of Agnus, Miyo, Taion and Sena) decides to put aside the hatred that grips them, joining forces to be able to thwart a new threat, even more dangerous than the ongoing war that has been raging for generations. And this is how the events of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will begin, an adventure to be lived in one breath that will not fail to excite even those who grew up with the JRPG.
The story of this third chapter is linked to that of the previous titles, but still manages to be enjoyable even for those who decide to approach the franchise for the first time. There characterization of the six main characters highlights an extremely complex and outlined vision of the world, altering moments of lightness to others that are seriously more dramatic and that will not fail to excite even the most fearless. For most of the adventure it will be easy so try one strong empathy for the cast of characters, something that in a Japanese role-playing game is as fundamental as air. A bit’ less inspired the villainswhich – if compared with the six heroes that we will be called to lead – will not remain etched in the memory of all those who engage in the adventure for long.

“Better” of the same
As regards the game mechanicsXenoblade Chronicles 3 obviously starts from the base represented by the two previously published episodes: Monolith Soft has not upset anything, but has improved substantially the good that had been done previously. Longtime fans of the series will therefore be comfortable with a combat system now oiled e functional in all its parts. Each of the party members can in fact choose one class between three prominent categories, namely attacker, defender and healer. The combination of these classes will allow you to come out as winners from the clashes, also considering that some secondary characters can be enlisted as seventh temporary members of the party, especially with regard to some special missions that we are going to face.
The combat system in MMO style will be able not liked by purists, but it is also true that it is now a distinctive trait of the Xenoblade Chronicles series so the now well-known “take it or leave it” applies. In fact, every battle is based onset up a correct strategy, rather than going on the attack with your units going heavy in terms of brute force. In fact, to knock out the opponent, you will almost always need a party suitable for the occasion, which will make every battle always interesting and never boring. One of the most significant novelties of this third episode is represented by the possibility of switching from one fighter to another in real time during the clashes, which is what it also increases the amount of tactics at our disposal.
As for the rest, even the exploration of the world of Aionios returns that pleasant sense of discovery and wonder already felt in the previous two chapters of the franchise, thanks to a truly vast horizon and a large number of details around us. A system of crafting wearable or food preparation gems will give a further meaning to our crossings, which are obviously accentuated by a technical sector that squeezes the graphics chip of Nintendo Switch, a console often unfairly pointed out for its alleged low hardware power. Finally, there is also a very good musical sector, first of all thanks to the presence of Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Final Fantasy XV), which goes hand in hand with an exceptional dubbing fomented by an excellent Italian adaptation, which is not bad.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (Tested on Switch)
8.9Total Score
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is the perfect closure of a trilogy that over the years has managed to establish itself as a guarantee of quality, as well as one of those games that JRPG fans must try at least once in their life: a layered combat system really rich in variables, a sense of wonder dictated by a truly fascinating explorable world and, last but not least, a graphic and sound sector worthy of the Monolith reputation. Perhaps, the game might be a little indigestible to the purists of the genre raised on bread and turn-based JRPG, although the average quality of the production is so high that resisting it will be really difficult (not to say impossible).
