According to whistleblower Shpeshal Nick, known for his confidential reporting from Xbox circles, fans of Japanese role-playing games of the Xbox 360 era should pay attention to the next one Xbox Showcase, which will be held on June 9th at 7:00 pm Italian time. The reason? He didn’t make it clear, but it’s really easy to make assumptions in this case.
Shpeshal Nick said precisely: “If what I’ve heard is true, fans of Japanese role-playing games from the Xbox 360 era will have something new to look forward to at the showcase.” What could it be?
The hypothesis
The most likely hypotheses are that he is talking about something related to Blue Dragon (2006) oa Lost Odyssey (2007), two Japanese role-playing games exclusive to the Xbox 360, both developed by Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Mistwalker, the father of the Final Fantasy series. The first was characterized by the artistic direction of the late Akira Toriyama, the author of Dragon Ball, who had given his style to the game, while the second had a more realistic style that looked in some way to the Final Fantasy of the PS2 era. Whether we are talking about remakes, sequels, reboots or remasters is impossible to say at this stage.
Regardless, the two games were part of Microsoft’s effort to sell Xbox 360 to the Japanese public, after the complete flop of the first Xbox, trying to enrich the console’s catalog with titles that could exert a certain attraction on fans.
Lost Odyssey had no sequel, while Blue Dragon saw the release of Blue Dragon Plus in 2008 and Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow in 2009, only for Nintendo DS instead of Xbox. It should be noted that after another attempt at Nintendo Wii (Last Story), Mistwalker stopped developing on consoles, moving on to create games for the mobile market, the latest of which is the acclaimed Fantasian for iOS systems.
Actually Xbox 360 had others too Exclusive JRPGslike Enchanted Arms, Infinite Undiscovery and Magna Carta 2, but the two most famous, as well as those published by Microsoft, are undoubtedly Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, so if we had to bet, we wouldn’t have many doubts about it.
