It seems time for Xbox to find a successor to Phil Spencer.
It’s been 20 years since Xbox made an appearance and after the overwhelming success of the Xbox 360, something went wrong with the next console, the One perhaps too ahead of its time. It was the hand of Phil Spencer to revive the whole, leading to an ecosystem and an expansion of the Xbox division hitherto unthinkable.
But it’s been 33 years since Spencer joined Microsoft and at some point, a successor will be needed. In an interview with GQ, he expressed himself in this sense, also citing the plans “Horizon“:
“Clearly, having been here for 33 years, I have more years behind me than in front of me“he told GQ.”But the longevity of this team, the sustainability of this team, there is nothing that is more important to me right now than this. You should do this when thinking about the long-term health of the team. To make sure the team is in a good position. That the company culture is in a good position. And that we are making the right decisions about who to bet. The Xbox division must outlive me“.
Reference was therefore made to how the division continues through “horizons”, plans marked out over time and long-lasting projects. The “Horizon One” plans refer to today for example, he said. “Horizon Two” are projects that will take place in a year or three while “Horizon Three” are great ideas that could only be realized in five or even ten years.
The latter are like a bet, that “they probably won’t work“, but it’s important to have a team that works to ensure that innovation thrives in the future.
“What I’ve learned is that it’s also very risky not to [prendere un rischio]”, he said. “You need to plant those seeds today. Because they’re not just going to “happen”. And you are not able to easily buy innovation“.
Seeing XCloud, Game Pass, and the entire ecosystem setup, you certainly can’t blame them.
