Dhe Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel has withdrawn his thesis due to allegations of plagiarism. Bettel said on Tuesday that he had asked the University of Lorraine in France to annul his 1999 diploma. In doing so, he wanted to “avoid a loss of confidence in academic work”.
Bettel did not admit to having plagiarized his work. However, he stated that “it was not my intention to mislead anyone”. The allegations of plagiarism appeared in October in a report by the Luxembourg media company “Reporter”. It said that “more than three quarters” of Bettel’s thesis came from uncited sources.
Formerly established as a lawyer
After an internal investigation, the university asked Bettel to revise his thesis as quickly as possible. The university explained that she informed Bettel of her decision on Monday.
The 48-year-old Prime Minister, who studied law and was formerly admitted to the Luxembourg Bar, also holds a further law degree from the University of Lorraine.
