Last Thursday, FC Barcelona confirmed what many already suspected: Xavi Hernández will stop being the coach of the Barça team at the end of this season. The decision of Joan Laporta, president of the club, has generated great controversy, especially due to the information circulating about a controversial list of casualties that the Catalan coach would have presented to the board.
According to the “Sport” program, Xavi would have demanded the departure of several players from the squad, including two of the most expensive signings in recent years: João Félix and Vitor Roque. The presence of these names on the casualty list would have been the last straw for Laporta, who finally decided to do without the services of the former Barça player.
Xavi’s decision to dispense with João Félix and Vitor Roque would have been based on both economic and image reasons. In the case of the Portuguese, his salary and his poor performance would have made his continuity a problem for the club’s coffers.
On the other hand, Vitor Roque’s situation was more complex. The young Brazilian arrived at Barça from Athletico Paranaense for a figure close to 40 million euros, in one of Deco’s first big decisions as sports director. Removing him from the team now would have meant admitting the failure of this operation, something that Laporta could not allow.
Another name that has been linked to Xavi’s departure is Robert Lewandowski. According to “Gol a Gol”, the Catalan coach would not have seen favorably the continuity of the Polish striker, something that would have been reflected in the repeated changes that Lewandowski suffered in the last matches.
The possible departure of Xavi leaves FC Barcelona in a delicate situation. The club will have to look for a new coach who knows how to manage a squad full of stars and who, at the same time, achieves satisfactory sporting results. The task will not be easy, and Barça’s future appears uncertain.
