The Spanish Xabi Fernández, coach of the INEOS Britannia crew, regretted this Friday, after receiving two defeats on the fourth day of the final of the America’s Cup in Barcelona against the Emirates Team New Zealand (6-2), that this weekend “we will have to force rival mistakes.”
The British squad, winner of the Challengers Tournament, began the final of the top nautical competition with a resounding 4-0 in an impeccable start by the ‘kiwis’, launched towards their goal of revalidating the title and lifting the Hundred Guineas Jug .
However, on the third day, played this Wednesday, the ‘Challenger of Record’ (first challenger), led by helmsman Ben Ainslie, surprised the Emirates with two wins that made the final 4-2 after two rival errors, one in the first test after missing the flight in the pre-departure.
“Today’s reading cannot be very positive. With the two victories we wanted to continue closing the gap and we have done things well, but the ‘kiwis’ have been on top at all times,” the Gipuzkoan analyzed.
The next day is scheduled to be played this Saturday, but the wind forecasts for this weekend are not very optimistic and it is not ruled out that it could reach Monday.
“We will see if tomorrow and Sunday we can haggle or not. If we go to Monday, we may have an easterly wind with more waves. If we could choose, we would choose more wind,” said Fernández.
The INEOS coach has stressed that the emotional state of his team is not going to be a problem for the outcome of the final: “These people do not need you to motivate them. They are better than you and they are not going to give up. They have been in similar situations and we will focus on what is coming,” he concluded.
