North Rhine-Westphalia’s Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) has spoken out in favor of a woman as the successor to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Berlin – “In my opinion, the time is ripe for a woman in Bellevue Palace,” he told “Welt am Sonntag”. The Union has the most electorate in the Federal Assembly and should therefore “have the right to its own proposal”. He rejects the re-election of Steinmeier.
“After the Union has appointed the first female Federal Chancellor, the first Federal Defense Minister and the first EU Commission President, it would be only logical if it also proposed the first female Federal President,” Wüst told the newspaper. “A Federal President could give important new impulses, especially in these times when social cohesion is the foremost reason of state.”
Wüst did not give a specific name. He could “stimulate just one thought process in the Union”. The election of the Federal President will take place in February of next year.
