The 2022 WRC calendar was completed today with the announcement of the Ypres Rally. The Belgian event will take the vacant place in August and thus completes the series of 13 events that will define the 2022 world rally champion as regards the drivers, but also as regards the Constructors.
As for the Ypres Rally, it will take place from 18 to 21 August and will be held entirely on asphalt, as happened last season. It is a fast race, where the roads have wide ditches at the edge of the road that do not allow mistakes.
In 2021 the Ypres Rally was won by the home crew formed by Thierry Neuville and Martijn Wydaeghe. That was their first success together, then replicated at the Rally de Catalunya a few weeks later, again on asphalt.
On Thursday there will be the Shakedown and the starting ceremony, while the first specials will be held starting on Friday, with the leader of the World Championship leading the way. The race will end, as usual, on Sunday with the Power Stage, set for lunch time.
Jona Siebel, managing director of WRC promoters, said: “Belgium brought something very different to last year’s WRC season, thanks to its treacherous special stages and fast format, which meant there was little time to stop. to breathe “.
“The Ypres region is throwing all its heart into the week of the rally. There is a great buzz about testing and we are sure it will be replicated in the city itself this time, when fans are admitted to the beautiful Grote Markt service park.”
“We were very impressed with the professionalism and plans of Zlin’s organizing team. Rally remains a key event in the FIA European Rally Championship and the door remains open to their WRC ambitions. We look forward to continuing to work with them.” concluded Siebel.
