Thierry Neuville closes the first day of competition of the Rally of Spain 2021 in the best possible way, that is by winning the PS6, the Riba-roja 2 of 14.21 kilometers and increasing, albeit slightly, his small advantage over his rival for the victory: Elfyn Evans.
The Hyundai Motorsport driver also made the difference on a test potentially less suitable for the i20s, taking home the fourth special of the day and further legitimizing the first position in the general classification captured in the previous test after an amazing time to say the least.
Neuville led Evans by 4 tenths of a second and now his lead in the overall standings over Toyota Racing’s Welshman is 7 tenths of a second. A trifle, which will make the two leave practically equal tomorrow.
Dani Sordo’s tire strategy seems to have worked, albeit not with the margin he probably would have hoped for. In the afternoon lap the Spaniard chose to take 2 spare tires with him (everyone chose the Hard for the whole day, as regards the compounds) and, after losing a few tenths in PS4 against Ogier, he then recovered in the two later.
This led Sordo to reduce his disadvantage from the podium, now 5 “4. Sébastien Ogier struggled a lot today, although this is the time to close the speeches for the title. Neuville, for now, is giving him a notable favor: forcing Evans to recover just 3 points on the 7-time world champion, but what worries Ogier is the difficulties that Ogier is encountering in capturing important times.
Kalle Rovanpera closes fifth on the day of competition, but far from those who precede him and those who follow him. Behind him are the two drivers of the M-Sport Ford team, with Adrien Fourmaux capable of seizing a fifth time in PS6 and confirming himself sixth with an 18.7 clear of his teammate Gus Greensmith.
Oliver Solberg continues his learning curve with a WRC Plus and is eighth ahead of rookie Nil Solans, teammate of the Swede this weekend. To signal the retirements of Takamoto Katsuta, who crashed in today’s first special, and of Ott Tanak, also involved in an accident.
In WRC2 Eric Camilli confirms his leadership after the puncture that slowed Mads Ostberg. The Frenchman, at the wheel of a Citroen C3 Rally2, has a clear advantage of 10 seconds over the first of his rivals, Nikolay Gryazin in a Skoda Fabia R5 Evo. Third position for Teemu Suninen, making his debut this weekend at the wheel of the Hyundai i20 N Rally2 official.
The Rally di Spagna will restart tomorrow morning with Special Stage 7, the Savalla 1 of 14.08 kilometers. The first car, the Hyundai i20 Coupé WRC of Nil Solans and Marc Martì, will enter the special at 08:44.
