The first special of today’s afternoon lap of the Rally of Spain, the penultimate round of the WRC 2021, tells of a Thierry Neuville very different from the one seen this morning – who, moreover, managed to do well despite the understeer problems – and much more consistent from a performance point of view.
The Hyundai Motorsport driver won the PS4 Vilaplana 2 by 20 kilometers, beating rally leader Elfyn Evans by 3 tenths. The Belgian has recovered little in terms of time against the Welshman of toyota Racing, but the signal he has sent is important.
This morning Neuville had shown a gap of 5 “1 from Evans, while this afternoon he improved by almost 6 seconds compared to the first pass and managed to win the special, the second of his day after PS2.
Evans, on the other hand, has worsened his practice time by 1 “compared to the morning and now has a margin of 7” 6 in the general classification right on Thierry Neuville.
Important third time for Sébastien Ogier, who was thus able to further distance the first of the pursuers for the low step of the podium, Dani Sordo, fifth in special. The Spaniard from Hyundai set off for the afternoon lap with 2 spare tires. This means additional weight which acts as a ballast for the Korean car. This is also why his time was slower than Ogier’s.
Kalle Rovanpera did better than Sordo, 6 tenths faster. Behind them, however, practically everything changes. Ott Tanak went off the road at kilometer 3.6 of the special and was forced to retire. There are currently no images available of the incident, but the crew came out of the accident unscathed.
The withdrawal of Hyundai’s Estonian earned a position for all the drivers behind him, starting with the two M-Sport team drivers, Adrien Fourmaux and Gus Greensmith. The Frenchman is now sixth and has considerably improved the time signed in the first pass on the same race.
