There are 87 (last year there were 74) crews registered for the 21st edition of the Rally Italia Sardegna, the sixth round of the 2024 FIA World Rally Championship scheduled from 31 May to 2 June, also valid for the WRC2, the WRC3 and the Junior World Championship. This 21st edition of the race will therefore see a notable number of registered participants for the event, organized by the Automobile Club of Italy with the support of the Sardinia Region, a very important signal that confirms the results achieved in previous years. And which also demonstrates how the choice of wanting to carry out an edition with a more compact format this year was appreciated by the drivers, a choice adopted at the request of the FIA and the WRC Promoter on the basis of an exemption that Sardinia obtained, for race and test a more concentrated event format, which may become an option for other organizers in the near future, under new FIA regulations being introduced.
A total of 33 different nationalities will be represented (Italy, Finland, Belgium, Sweden, Ireland, Estonia, Japan, Great Britain, the Principality of Monaco, France, Spain, Luxembourg, Russia, Bulgaria, Bolivia, Argentina, Peru, the Czech Republic, Poland, Paraguay, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Turkey, Croatia, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Oman, Romania, Greece), new record for the event confirming the international nature of the event, and testifying to how the world rally is an important stage that promotes Sardinia by spreading its image throughout the world. There will be a large representation of 21 Italian crews (of which 8 are Sardinian), followed by the French with 9 registered, while there are 5 Spaniards, 4 Estonians and Finns, followed by all the others.
Rally Italia Sardinia 2024: the protagonists
At the start of the race there will be two world champions, Sébastien Ogier and Ott Tanak, together with all the other main drivers participating in the 2024 World Championship. There will be 8 hybrid Rally 1 cars in the race which will be entrusted to the three official Toyota drivers ( Ogier, Evans and Katsuta), the three from Hyundai (Neuville, Tanak and Sordo) and the two from Ford M-Sport (Fourmaux and Munster).
There are 42 participants in the WRC2, among them the presences of Yohan Rossel and Nikolay Gryazin on Citroen C3 Rally 2, Oliver Solberg, Pierre Louis Loubet and Kajetan Kajetanowicz on Skoda Fabia RS Rally2, Teemu Suninen, Nicolas Ciamin and Emil Lindholm stand out. on Hyundai i20 Rally 2 and Sami Pajari, Georg Linnamae, Roope Korhonen and Jans Solans on Toyota Yaris Rally 2. Also noteworthy is the presence of Pepe Lopez (Ford Fiesta Rally 2) and Martin Prokop (Skoda), in his 19th participation in the island race, also at the start of the Wrc 2 Masters Cup is the former champion Mauro Miele who will face the German Armin Kremer (both on Skoda Fabia Rally2).
The ACI Team Italia driver Roberto Daprà and our Donetto, Hoelbling, Brazzoli Tiramani are also registered for WRC 2. Covi e Pozzo navigated by the Sardinian Pier Paolo Cottu (all on Skoda). Then 18 drivers will also be competing in the Junior World Championship on MSport Poland’s Ford Fiesta Rally 3, led by the main protagonists of this season, namely the Estonian Jurgenson and the Australian Gill.
Finally, there are a total of 8 Sardinian crews competing, among them first and foremost Francesco Marrone, the only driver to have participated in all 21 editions of the race, on a Peugeot 208 T16 navigated by Francesco Fresu. Also at the start is Giuseppe Dettori, in his 18th participation, navigated by Carlo Pisano on Skoda Fabia, and then also Mura-Demontis (Skoda Fabia), Liceri-Mendola (Ford Fiesta R3), Biancu-Mazzone Renault Clio R3), and finally Pusceddu -V.Cottu, Schirru-Salis and Mara-Tendas (all on Peugeot 208 R4).
Rally Italia Sardinia 2024: the race
The 2024 edition of the Rally Italia Sardegna, sixth round of the World Rally Championship, is scheduled from 31 May to 2 June with the event based in Alghero. The race is made up of three stages and includes a total of 16 special stages for a total of 266.12 timed km.
