In recent weeks, the rumors concerning the new path he could take had become increasingly insistent Cyril Abiteboula French engineer who boasts a respectable past in the world of Formula 1. Now the 45-year-old Parisian is definitely ready to move to the WRC, where he will hold the position of Hyundai’s new team principal. In this way, the Korean house is best prepared for the season 2023greeting at the same time Julien Moncetwho will leave the team early next year without having said anything specific about his future.
The team’s hope is to restore greater stability at the end of a rather troubled 2022 both in terms of results and, above all, management, as confirmed by the resignation of team manager Pablo Marcos. Abiteboul is therefore close to launching a new experience in his career, which began as an engineer and continued with more managerial roles. After being named Executive Director of Renault in F1 in 2010, two years later he took over the role of Caterham team principal, team left in 2014 to return to Renault, this time as CEO. Last year, Abiteboul then reached an agreement with Mecachrome, the official supplier of Formula 2 engines, before the aforementioned assignment from Hyundai, which opens the doors of its absolute debut in the Rally.
Already during the last WRC championship, another former Renault had been indicated as a possible team principal of Hyundai to replace Moncet, with the negotiations that had, however, stalled after the Ypres rally: the candidate in question was Eric BoullierRenault and Lotus team principal from 2010 to 2013.
