League of Legends held its Play-Ins from September 29 to October 4 in CDMX. After several difficult games, the teams that rose to the group stage were Evil Geniouses and Royal Never Give Up. After day 5 of the Worlds 2022 tournament we were able to chat with Mac, the coach of Mad Lions.
One of the last matches pitted Mad Lions against Evil Geniouses. After the MAD loss, James MacCormack, better known as Mac—the team’s coach—shared a bit of his time with us and answered a few questions.
1. After this experience at the Play-Ins, what are the new areas of opportunity that you see for MAD Lions as a team?
Mac: It’s hard to say anything specific, because I still don’t know, I don’t think I’m going to know exactly what lessons I have to take from this, maybe until I’ve had a range of time to unplug and watch it from afar, and when I see it from afar , maybe I can see the mistakes I’ve made, maybe I can see them more clearly.
2. How was your experience in these Play-Ins held in Mexico?
Mac: Well, being here in Mexico has been amazing, just amazing. And it’s always the same — even when we’re in Spain — the passion that people have has been something very impressive for everyone. We here in Mexico feel like celebrities, that is my personal experience, since the people here are very, very welcoming.
3. From your perspective as a coach, do you think the teams that came to the Play-Ins are on the same level to generate real competition?
Mac: No, no, not at all, not even close. The teams that played today have a lot of difference in level, for example, the Chinese, puff, no no, who… Actually, nobody, nobody, compared to them, we are all far below their level. Many things intervene, it’s not just our players, the players are good, but it depends a lot on the servers, for example, the Chinese do share with the Koreans, the other emerging leagues have a much more restricted situation.
Well, finally, the next day, Royal Never Give Up -the Chinese team- made a stark difference in levels when facing Detonation FocusMe -the Japanese team-, demonstrating the impressive mechanical skill and solid teamwork .
