In the rainy weekend in the Brittany town of Landerneau, thousands of people painted blue, wearing white and red hats, gathered to break the world record for the largest Smurf meeting. In the city with 16,000 inhabitants, around 2,600 Smurfs were finally counted on Saturday, so the record attempt narrowly failed.
“The rain has cooled some people a bit. But the most important thing is that we had a super good time,” Jules Lesieur, co-president of the association that organized the Landerneau gathering, told AFP.
Many business people took part and decorated their shop windows with Smurf characters, comics or stickers. “It’s nice, there’s a good vibe. Everyone thinks it’s great, we’re pursuing a goal that we can have fun with. It’s not easy in times like these,” says 59-year-old Benoit Kermarec, disguised as a Smurf.
“The fact that there are small events like this is good for people, it’s balm for the soul,” says 25-year-old Morgane Derrien, disguised as Smurfette.
Officially, it is still the small German community of Lauchringen on the German-Swiss border that holds the world record for the largest Smurf meeting with 2762 participants on February 16, 2019.
However, about a year later, on March 7, 2020, Landerneau had surpassed this record with 3549 Smurfs. However, the record was not recognized by the Guinness Book because, according to the organizers, a document was missing.
The fact that it wasn’t quite enough this time hardly dampened the happy mood in Landerneau. “In any case, we’re the biggest Smurf gathering in the rain,” Lesieur said.
