The alpha of World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, the ninth expansion of the acclaimed game, has arrived and players are already testing the new content. While not all of the new content in the expansion is available for testing, Blizzard included a major update to the character creation menus in this first build: gender neutrality. World of Warcraft news and data mining site Wowhead has reported that the voice and pronoun options may also arrive in a later build.
The change currently implemented in the alpha renames the male and female body options in the character creator to Body 1 and Body 2. Characters created using the Body 1 option will use what used to be the male character customizations, particularly with regards to facial hair. Body 2 uses the existing female customization options: these characters will in fact have breasts. Players can switch body types while creating their own character or at an in-game barber shop in town.
In addition to changing the language around body types, Wowhead found that pronoun selection could also come into the game in a future build. However, Wowhead points out that the game rarely refers to the player’s character using specific genre titles or pronouns.
These changes are key to creating a more inclusive World of Warcraft, allowing players to create avatars that better represent themselves.
