As the discussions about the Olympic Games in Germany continue, it is becoming clear that the major sports festival of non-Olympic sports will come to Karlsruhe in 2029. But first a financial effort must be achieved.
OOlympic Games in Berlin or Düsseldorf, in Hamburg or Munich? A hundred years after the Nazi games of 1936 or in the 1940s? While the idea of the great ambition of German sport still seems nebulous, Karlsruhe is likely to make a big splash on May 1st: the World Games are scheduled to come to the city in 2029, the sports festival for non-Olympic sports with a good 3,500 participants.
Mayor Frank Mentrup speaks of a huge opportunity. “We don’t want to use the event as a halligalli for two weeks in August 29,” says Mentrup, “but rather as an introduction to the topics of sport, exercise, community spirit and commitment to society, in the city and in the region and in the national context .” Oliver Stegemann, member of the executive committee of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and board member of the interest group of non-Olympic associations, sees “the opportunity to step out of the shadows”. The event in Karlsruhe should not only deliver great games, it should also “be seen”.
