The italogeorgiano stops at the foot of the podium in the -97 kg of the Greek-Roman, out in the preliminary rounds the other blues. The dt Caneva draws up a balance of the four years in blue
The Italian wrestling team closes the expedition to the Oslo 2021 World Cup with the fifth place of Nikoloz Kakhelashvili in the Greco-Roman. The Italogeorgian was defeated by the Russian Sargsian in the final for the 97 kg bronze, thus ending his world championship adventure at the foot of the podium. The other blues, Aron Caneva, Gianluca Talamo, Colin John Realbuto and Simone Iannattoni for the freestyle, and Zaur Kabaloev for the Grecoromana, all stopped in the preliminary rounds. A particular World Cup, held almost two months after the Olympics, in which many big names did not participate: the Azzurri were in fact lacking in athletes of the caliber of Frank Chamizo, Abraham Conyedo and Dalma Caneva. “Kakhelashvili’s fifth place is prestigious and confirms his absolute value in the 97 kg category – commented the director Lucio Caneva -. Some of our liberalists have just changed weight categories, such as Aron Caneva, who dropped to 79 kg, or Simone. Iannattoni, who rose to 92 kg. While the young Realbuto, in the 65 kg, found himself facing a very difficult path, making his debut with the 2020 Pan-American champion Diakomihalis. Now we are waiting for the Absolutes, who will be the selections to participate in the European 2022 ” .
THE BUDGET
–
In the meantime, however, we can take stock of what has been a four-year period full of satisfactions for the Italian fight: “I would start from the result of Sara Da Col in March 2017 – remembers Lucio Caneva -, who scored an important bronze medal in the Europeans. Frank Chamizo has always won medals at both the World and European Championships every year and has had an amazing four-year period. In Tokyo, a bit like Rio, he missed the appointment with the Olympics: naturally finishing fifth at the Games, for a normal athlete, it is a huge result, but for him it is clear that it was not the goal. Let’s not forget the bronze of Daigoro Timoncini and the silver of Aurora Campagna at the 2019 European Championships, or of Dalma Caneva and Nikoloz Kakhelashvili who won the European silver in Rome in 2020 and bronze in Warsaw in 2021. Finally, Abraham Conyedo: not only did he hit a bronze at the 2018 World Cup and a bronze at the 2020 European Championship, but he crowned a stellar four-year period with the bronze medal or Olympic conquered in Tokyo a few months ago. Let’s say that Abraham did not miss anything. But beyond all this, let’s not forget the youth activity that has achieved results never seen before in Italy: flagship among our young Simone Piroddu and Aurora Russo. Simone, still in his junior year, won bronze at the U23 European Championships in Skopje, gold at the 2019 Cadet European Championships, gold at the Baku European Youth Olympics in 2019 and bronze at the 2018 Cadet World Championships in Zagreb. Aurora recently won a silver at the 2021 World Junior Championships, touching gold, she won bronze at the European Cadets 2019 and, she too, gold at the European Youth Olympics in Baku. I would say that in all age groups there was an exceptional result for everyone, with medals that had never been seen so compact in all classes by the Italian national team. We can only be satisfied “.
FUTURE AND PARIS2024
–
But we don’t stop there, the next appointment is the U23 World Championships, staged from 1 to 7 November in Belgrade: “We are quite fierce – concludes Caneva -. We will train in Hungary, for about two weeks, and then we will go to the race, rest assured to do well. We believe we have a fairly prepared and strong team and I hope we will achieve some important goals. ” Then straight to the next Olympics in Paris 2024: “The qualification system will be the same as the previous one: the 2023 World Cup and then the two direct qualifying matches. A difficult system that will see us suffer like all other nations, apart from the strongest ones. like the United States, Russia or Iran. It will be difficult for us but we have some spearheads. We are focused, we hope to do well and qualify at least as many athletes as those we brought to Tokyo and also to surpass us in the final results “.
