According to the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin will not personally attend the upcoming World Climate Conference in Glasgow.
Moscow – “Yes, unfortunately he won’t fly to Glasgow either,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov on Wednesday, according to the Interfax agency. Putin had previously promised to attend the COP26 summit, which is scheduled for October 31 to November 12, but left it open whether he would arrive in person or be connected via video.
It was only on Tuesday that the Kremlin announced that Putin would only attend the G20 summit in Rome at the end of October via video conference. Reference was made again and again to the corona situation, which has recently deteriorated dramatically in Russia. On Wednesday, according to official statistics, the authorities registered more than 34,000 new infections within 24 hours. Over the same period, 1,028 deaths were recorded – more than ever since the beginning of the pandemic. Because of several corona cases in his immediate vicinity, Putin, who was vaccinated with the Russian vaccine Sputnik, went into quarantine for more than two weeks in September.
There was also speculation about whether Putin could possibly meet US President Joe Biden again at one of the upcoming summits. The two heads of state met personally for the first time in Geneva in the summer. In response to a question from journalists, Kremlin spokesman Peskov said that the possibility of a meeting between Putin and Biden by the end of the year “in one format or another is quite real”. The relationship between Moscow and Washington is very tense because of a large number of conflicts and sanctions. (dpa)
