“Brain health must be cultivated every day”, protected with healthy lifestyles and trained also by socializing. Prevention is at the center of World Brain Day, celebrated today, July 22. The World Federation of Neurology, together with all the major neurology and neurorehabilitation associations globally, has decided to highlight it as a priority to raise awareness not only among patients, but all citizens. Taking care of the brain, experts warn, is a daily task that falls to each of us.
“Brain health should be understood as something we must learn to consider every day, cultivating it”, says Matilde Leonardi, director of the Complex Structure of Neurology, Public Health, Disability and the Coma Research Centre of the Fondazione Irccs Istituto neurologico Carlo Besta in Milan, and member of the board of the European Academy of Neurology. “Preventing brain diseases – explains the specialist – means being aware that a balanced diet, proper physical activity and cultivating social relationships are actions that play a fundamental role in ensuring the well-being of our brain. If you have brain health, you are healthy, and therefore learning to manage and prevent those factors that can cause damage to your brain is an exercise that each of us can do with simplicity. This is the great message of this day, a message that is being spread simultaneously by all neurologists in all countries in the world and also by our institute. Take care of your brain, we neurologists are here to help you do it”.
