The World Athletics Association, World Athletics (WA), has been the first Olympic World Sports Association in the recent history to have decided. The biological affiliation of an athlete is to be determined. Association President Sebastian Coe described the WA Council’s decision as a “really important step towards protecting women”. One does not only want to talk about the integrity of women’s sports, but actually guarantee it, ”the 68-year-old Briton had previously explained.
The topic of the difference in gender development (DSD) was recently brought back into focus. At the Olympic boxing tournament in Paris, there had been debates whether the later winners Imame Khelif and Yu-Tin Lin could have started in the women’s class. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had referred to the travel passes of the athletes in which the female gender is shown. Coe had repeatedly discussed the debate in the race for the presidential office in the IOC, he had no chance in the election victory of Kirsty Coventry with only eight out of 97 votes.
Coe now emphasized that the exploitation test was not considered excessively invasive. He was confident that the guideline could withstand a legal contestation. “We complained about the arbitral tribunal for our DSD regulations. They were confirmed and confirmed again after an appeal.” The kick -off was the debate about the South African runner Caster Semenya. The debate had led to DSD athletes in athletics had to reduce their hormone levels with medication until the end to take part in women’s competitions. This rule is now being replaced by the new DNA tests.
