Working life Yle: Ill-treatment and even criminal treatment of foreign workers occurs all over Finland, at worst it is human trafficking

At worst, there is even human trafficking behind the grievances.

Grievances the treatment of foreign workers is plentiful in Finland and throughout the country, Yle reported on Monday.

According to Yle’s extensive survey, foreign workers are being exploited both in the largest cities and in small church villages. At worst, there is even human trafficking behind the grievances, Yle says.

HS has previously investigated the widespread and systematic exploitation of workers in Nepalese restaurants, where similar practices are repeated: work is done in cross-border quantities and compensation is not even close to official working conditions. In addition, the HS found out last year how weakly the government intervenes in human trafficking.

Mightily according to the study, ill-treatment is often the responsibility of an entrepreneur who is himself a foreigner. The ill-treatment of foreign workers seems to be rooted in Finland quite permanently.

According to the Chief Inspector of Occupational Safety and Health interviewed by Yle, the most serious cases of maladministration are underpaid work and forced labor. Crime Victim Support is currently helping several hundred people who have been exploited in working life, almost all of whom are foreigners, Yle says. They most often work in the restaurant and cleaning industries, as well as in the construction industry and various seasonal jobs, for example.

HS reported in July 2020 that many companies are depriving their foreign cleaners without penalty. According to HS, at worst, cleaners go unpaid and sleep during working hours.
